Cigna’s individual-plan shopping site says it will not offer individual and family medical plans for 2027. Employees using those policies need to examine their 2027 options rather than assume the same medical plan will renew.
What the notice says
Cigna says eligible consumers can still obtain individual and family medical coverage for the remainder of 2026 through a special enrollment period. Its notice says individual and family dental plans will remain available in 2027. This is an individual/family medical-plan announcement, not a statement that all Cigna coverage is ending. The page does not display an announcement date; we checked it on September 11. source
Why this matters to an ICHRA workforce
An employer contribution can continue while the individual policy an employee purchases changes. That makes carrier availability part of the renewal analysis, even if the employer is keeping the same administrator and contribution strategy. Employees should check their own renewal or discontinuation notices for applicable dates and instructions.
The practical review starts with the affected employees’ counties, current plan identifiers and coverage needs. A replacement policy from another insurer may have a different network, formulary, deductible and method for accessing specialist care. A similar monthly premium is not enough to establish that it is a comparable replacement.
Questions to resolve before enrollment
- Which employees currently use an affected individual medical policy?
- What plans will actually be available at their home addresses for 2027?
- Are their clinicians, hospitals and prescriptions covered under the exact replacement plan?
- How will the new premium interact with the employer’s allowance?
- Who will confirm the enrollment, effective date and first premium payment?
These are questions for an orderly coverage transition, not reasons to cancel existing coverage immediately. HealthCare.gov’s ICHRA guidance explains how the employer offer interacts with Marketplace coverage and financial assistance. source
Use current enrollment instructions
CMS’s August guidance describes the federal 2027 open-enrollment period as November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. State Marketplace schedules and effective-date deadlines require their own check; the last day of open enrollment is not necessarily the deadline for coverage starting January 1. source
Read our 2027 planning outlook to connect carrier changes with contribution modeling and employee communications. The unresolved question for an individual employee is the replacement policy available locally, not whether a national exit notice alone predicts their future cost.
